Why I Write Paranormal Ménage - Darker Nights
By Nan Comargue
I love writing ménage. One woman, two men. The only reason I haven’t written “and more” stories is because I can’t figure out who goes where. Truthfully, it’s often difficult to keep track of three vigorous participants – especially when two are supernatural beings like in my new erotic romance story, Darker Nights, part of the Wild After Dark anthology.
All that’s good about the fantasy of being the exclusive object of a man’s affections is doubled when there are two men and one lucky, lucky woman. But it’s not always easy to convincingly show how the heroine reached this place where she is ready to break free from the conventions of heterosexual monogamy and become open to loving more than one man (or vampire…or werewolf).
In Darker Nights, the heroine Delia Darker, an attorney in her family law firm, is as demure as her first name suggests. But her legacy is much darker. For generations, the family firm has represented immortal beings, including vampires and werewolves. So Delia has the weight of hundreds of years behind all her family’s warnings not to get involved with a client.
Delia isn’t the kind of woman who just jumps into a sexual relationship with sexy vampire Caleb and hot werewolf Mark, no matter how attracted she is to both males. To ease her into it, I showed how, as a young law student, she was overwhelmed by her attraction to much (as in centuries, not decades) older vampire, Daniel Carton. Yes, their sex scene at the beginning of the story sort of violates the rule against showing sex with partners other than the heroes but I thought it set up the progression better than simply showing Delia struggling to fight her desire for two immortals – she’s been there before.
As for Caleb and Mark, they’ve got different motivations. Yes, they want Delia, but Caleb also believes in an old prophecy that says two immortals turned on the same night will seek out the same mate. Mark is more skeptical. The story shows how the very real connection he feels to Delia eventually wins him over. The prophecy soon becomes secondary to the connection all three feel.
Even after some fantastic sex and extended time together, Delia continues to have doubts. Her struggle shows how difficult it is to overcome lifelong boundaries and taboos. Mark and Caleb are persistent but also know when to give her space after she pulls back and tries to end the relationship.
In the end, making an unconventional ménage work is, well, hard work, just like any other relationship. Even for immortals.
Excerpt from Darker Nights:
Delia’s head was spinning but it wasn’t from the loud pulsing music, the surging crowd or even the bloodwine she’d drank far too much of. It was the company.
For the past two hours, Mark and Caleb hadn’t left her side. They’d pressed the drink on her and watched as she’d drunk down the thick, sweet nectar. They’d taken her to the private owner’s lounge where the music had become background rather than being aggressively upfront. She could look down at the crowd below, dancing and kissing and even fucking in dimly lit corners and feel a part of it. The energy found its way inside her, making her hot and restless.
She lifted her hair from where it clung to the back of her neck and felt Caleb’s lips replace it.
She smiled to herself.
He’d been doing that a lot tonight. What had started with a guiding hand at the small of her back as they’d made their way through the crowd had turned into an arm draped across her shoulders then the press of his hips against her ass as she’d leaned over the low balcony to look at the dance floor. The kisses were the best. Cool and fleeting, like a short mist of rain to quiet the worst of the fire within her.
But it wasn’t enough.
